The USA is the third (in terms of the population) and the fourth (in terms of the territory) largest country in the world. It includes state islands in the Pacific Ocean (Baker, Guam, Jarvis, Johnston, Kingman, the Northern Mariana Islands, Midway, Palmyra, American Samoa, or Wake) and on the Atlantic (the Virgin Islands, Navassa, or Puerto Rico, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States).
Due to the vast area of the USA, its climate varies significantly. East of the 100th meridian west the climate is humid, in the north – more continental, whereas in the south, it is subtropical. The southern part of Florida and the Hawaii lie within the tropical zone. The Great Plains located west of the 100th meridian west comprise semi-desert grassland. The Great Basin has a desert climate in the south-west, a Mediterranean climate on the coast of California, and maritime in Oregon and Washington. Alasca, in turn, is situated in the subarctic climate zone, whereas states by the Gulf of Mexico are exposed to frequent hurricanes.
The coastline, excluding islands in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, measures 19,924 km. Along the East Coast there stretches the Atlantic Plain which in the south combines with the flat Coastal Plain with numerous lagoons and sandy barriers on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Atlantic Coast holds the largest urban agglomerations in the world – the Northeast megalopolis (or the BosWosh megalopolis). The Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and a group of sea straits are sometimes referred to as the American Mediterranean Sea. Pacific Coast Ranges run parallel to the coasts of the Pacific Ocean. The elongated Gulf of California in the south and vast Prudhoe Bay in Alaska in the north are the main bays in the USA. Hawaii, which belongs to the United States, makes up an archipelago of volcanic islands with both extinct and active volcanoes.
The most popular places for sailing are Florida (Key West, Miami, and Saint Petersburg), Annopolis on the East Coast, and Anacortes on the West Coast. The sailing infrastructure is well developed and meets high standards, although the services provided there are not cheap.
