Sunny Cyprus (with Nicosia as its capital) is situated at the crossing of tracks connecting Asia with Africa and Europe. It is located 43 km south-east of the Turkish coast and is the third largest island of the Mediterranean Sea. The mountains, which occupy the major part of the island, picturesquely descend toward the coast.
The island is extremely popular with tourists mainly due to its weather conditions. Winter is relatively mild – average temperatures during this season oscillate between 10-12 °C, while summer is very warm, with average temperatures of 26-28 °C (there are days, however, when the thermometer indicates 40 °C). The weather has also influence on the flora, which is typical of the Mediterranean region and thus includes evergreen macchia, oaks, cypress trees, pines, and Lebanon cedar trees. Cyprian waters provide very good conditions for sailing. During the summer, south-western winds dominate here. At dawn, a light southern wind rises, which changes its direction in the afternoon starting to blow from the west with the strength of 3-4 degrees on the Beaufort scale. In winter, the wind strength reaches only 2-3 degrees on the scale.
Cyprus has two natural ports in Limassol and Famagusta, and an artificial one in Larnaca. Sailing in the warm waters of Cyprus is very exciting since it combines mild sailing conditions, amazing landscapes, and fabulous beaches with a possibility to admire historical monuments and relics of antique art. Larnaca marina, located about 15-minute way from Larnaca international airport, is an ideal starting point and charter yacht base in Cyprus. Sailing in the waters of Northern Cyprus, which is under Turkish occupation, is strictly forbidden.
The fleet offered by shipowners in Cyprus is not very large. The base is situated in Limassol marina.
